Just as athletes have coaches to improve their sporting performance, a life coach can help you get what you really want from your life and work.
Regulation and coach training
Coaching is not legally regulated in the UK. Anyone can set up as a life coach without knowing very much about the subject. However, there are two main organisations which seek to set standards for the coaching industry. These are the International Coach Federation (ICF) and the Association for Caching. You'll find more information about what they do on their website. We adhere to their code of ethics. All our coaches have been professionally trained and undergo regular professional development. We believe this is essential to ensure excellence in coaching.
Professionally-trained coaches recognise that you are the expert in your own life. They don't compel you to do anything and don't criticise or judge you. They ask objective questions to guide you through difficulties and problems, helping you to overcome blocks and fears as you make your way towards your goal.
Coaching can be life-changing because you'll learn a great deal about yourself along the coaching journey. And the effects can be enduring because you'll make changes to your life which will have powerful effects well into the future. Coaching is not like counselling or other therapies. For example, counselling looks at past events which are affecting your life now. Coaching doesn't look back, it looks forward to your future.
How does coaching work?
Even if you don't have a special goal in mind, your coach will help you to define one based on discussions you'll have about your life.
You and your coach work together as a partnership where you make all the decisions and your coach acts as a guide, motivator and analyst. Do you want to
- get more from your life?
- start a business or change career?
Coaching is about moving you from where you are now, to where you want to be in your life. It's a kind of journey where you work towards a specific goal.
